LPL Celebrates 50 Years of Hip-Hop!

From the street corner to the world stage, hip-hop has grown into one of the world’s most prominent musical genres and cultural influences.

On August 11, 1973, Clive “DJ Kool Herc” Campbell hosted a house party in the South Bronx of New York City—an event that has often been cited as the debut for hip-hop music. That same year, basketball star Julius Erving was traded from the Virginia Squires to the New York Nets, two teams in the upstart American Basketball Association (ABA).

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip hop, Dr. Greg Kaliss, a history professor at York College of Pennsylvania and author of Beyond the Black Power Salute: Athlete Activism in an Era of Change, will give a talk about the surprising and often-forgotten links between these two developments.

Q&A to follow.
